Dave McLaughlin

Dave McLaughlin was an indie filmmaker from Boston before it was cool to be an indie filmmaker from Boston. His latest film project, On Broadway, which has been dubbed "the next Good Will Hunting," stars Joey McIntyre, Eliza Dushku, Mike O'Malley, Will Arnett, and Amy Poehler. The film follows a blue-collar guy from Boston who writes a play about his uncle's death in hopes of reconnecting with his distant father. This isn't his first crack at the business, though: McLaughlin's been writing for the stage and screen for more than 15 years. A former deputy director at the Boston Redevelopment Authority, he currently serves as vice-president of Marlo Marketing/Communications; he even finds time for nonprofit work, serving as executive director of Boston World Partnerships, a group that helps brand Boston as desirable for growing businesses.

If anyone's going to up the cool factor of Somerville's Union Square, it's Jonathan O'Toole, Wendy Friedman, and Adam Larson of kick-ass new housewares, apparel, and gift boutique Grand. They stock goods that a) you won't find in every shop in the city; b) are quirky and aesthetically amazing; and c) won't cost you a month's rent. Yeah, we're obsessed, too. CEO O'Toole has a marketing background (he helped found word-of-mouth marketing agency BzzAgent); Friedman's done graphic design (here she's chief buyer/merchandiser); and Larson, who serves as creative director, worked in advertising before starting his own studio, Adam&Co. We can't see how this trio could ever go wrong.

We've been having way too much fun lately scouring the "Inside Track" for celebrity sightings. And, at least to some degree, we have Mary Chiochios to thank. As director of operations at the Mass Film Office, Chiochios is the point person for the big-name film execs who come looking to cash in on the state's new tax credit; she's a liaison of sorts between the studios and the state. An independent producer by trade, Chiochios assists with everything from location-scouting to hiring crew members and local vendors (she's also working to develop workplace training programs that'll prepare both recent grads and more established professionals for the work), plus whatever other challenges are tossed her way. Her efforts haven't gone unrewarded: eight movies were filmed locally last year, and this year we're already up to seven -- and counting.

The editor who tells you she doesn't have favorite publicists is lying through her Crest White Strips. So when we heard that highly regarded local PR czarinas Regan Dillon, Jo Swani, and Sophie Zunz were pooling their schmoozing skills and contact lists to create the Moxie Agency (their definition: "tenacity, courage, and know-how"), we weren't at all surprised. The ladies have signed an A-list roster of lifestyle clients including the Liberty and Charles hotels, MAX Ultimate Food, Whiskey Park, Hudson, the Achilles Project, the Otto Club, and Daniela Corte Fashion. And if their first major event -- the socialite-crammed Louis Vuitton Copley store re-opening -- was any indication, this trio will soon be taking Boston's luxury sector by storm.

Giovanni Cudia

We expect two things from our hairstylists: proficiency with a pair of scissors and, equally important, a personality that'll keep us entertained in the chair. Giovanni Cudia, who styles at James Joseph Salon and represents UK-based haircare line ghd as a member of the brand's seven-person US artistic team, has both -- and then some. His work has been represented on ABC's Extreme Makeover and The Tyra Banks Show and on the pages of InStyle, The Boston Globe, and, of course, this very publication. But it's Cudia's most recent accomplishment, a stint in the tents of New York Fall Fashion Week during which his 'dos graced the runways of Erin Fetherston, Proenza Schouler, and Monique Lhuillier, that really took him to the next level. Don't worry, though: there's no chance we're letting him permanently defect to the Big Apple anytime soon.

In a nutshell, Lelle Lutts's job as marketing manager at Boston's Hard Rock Café is to keep the venue relevant on a musical level -- and she certainly has the expertise to do it, considering she worked in the music industry (for labels including Maverick and Def Jam) for a decade before coming on board. Lutts books anywhere from eight to 16 events in the venue's Cavern Club every month; she's brought in acts like Dublin's Paddy Casey and local heavyweights Bang Camaro. Lutts is also helping the Hard Rock shed its touristy reputation, catering instead to the tastes of local-music aficionados. As for her inclusion in this issue? "Player? Maybe," she says in an e-mail. "Busy? Definitely."

Demetri Tsolakis

At just 24 years old, Demetri Tsolakis has already fully arrived on the Boston scene. During his time at Suffolk University, he worked the nightlife circuit with ARIA Productions (and somehow still managed to graduate magna cum laude); post-college, he toiled in financial services by day and worked as a manager for Caprice and Underbar by night. Now settled into his post as general manager of Mantra, the charismatic Tsolakis has instituted (or will institute) some major improvements at the Ladder District mainstay: a new naan bar, revamped menus and cocktail lists, and a stepped-up directive to host more exclusive events like the 21 premiere's after-party and a major Bruins charity event. Though some of our nose-in-the-air friends refuse to shop anywhere but Newbury Street, Kimberly Harris and Todd MacLeod, co-owners of streetwear boutique LAB Boston, have been amassing a legion of rabid fans of their limited-edition Ts, collectible toys, and lovingly curated record collection. The super-minimal Allston space also regularly displays (and sells) work from guest artists.
