DIY wine and dine

Frank McClelland is one busy guy. He just recently moved his beloved L’Espalier a hop, skip, and a block from its original location to new digs at the Mandarin Oriental; opened another Sel de la Terre at the same hotel; and can now add “author” to his resume. Wine Mondays: Simple Wine Pairings with Seasonal Menus (Harvard Common Press, 2008; $24.95), penned with local food writer Christie Matheson, is McClelland’s first cookbook and arguably one of the first books to approach food and wine pairing in such a simple, straightforward way that even the biggest wine neophyte can understand it. Browse the 130 recipes — divided into four-course meals suited for each season — and try your hand at whipping up some L’Espalier dishes and choosing the perfect wine pairings. Pick up a copy at Porter Square Books (25 White Street, Cambridge, 617.491.2220) or L’Espalier (774 Boylston Street, Boston, 617.262.3023).

Kirsten Amann@Night: Blonde, ambitious

DO BLONDES really have more fun? Ask Kirsten Amann. She's on a quest to find out as she does research for Undercover Blonde, a book she's working on. The publicist-slash-cocktail-aficionado also posts updates on her blog (undercover-blonde.blogspot...
Opera Boston Underground at Lizard Lounge

Opera Boston Underground at Lizard Lounge

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13 It's 4 p.m. and your best friend texts you: "Tonight - indie band with the cute drummer, or opera show in Cambridge?" The choice seems obvious until you realize that the Cambridge venue is the Lizard Lounge (1667 Mass...
The Chinese New Year Spectacular at the Opera House

The Chinese New Year Spectacular at the Opera House

THURSDAY, JANUARY 10 - SATURDAY, JANUARY 12 If you didn't emerge on January 1 exhausted from all the festivities (and miserably hungover), here's another celebration to enjoy before snuggling into your annual hibernation. The Chinese New Year...
The BSO Repartee Series at Symphony Hall

The BSO Repartee Series at Symphony Hall

TUESDAY, JANUARY 8 A darkened room, soul-stirring crescendos, bare shoulders, and power suits: under the right circumstances, a visit to the symphony could be very, very sexy. And no one will shush you for trying to get someone's number during the...
Boston Modern Orchestra Project at Club Cafe

Boston Modern Orchestra Project at Club Cafe

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 11 Normally the soundtrack to a night at Club Café (209 Columbus Avenue, Boston, 617.536.0966) consists of techno, Madonna, and old-school Britney. Tonight, though, booty-shaking beats take a backseat to culture as the Boston Modern...

Dave Kimelberg@Night: Think Ink

AS VICE president and general counsel for a conservative East Coast venture capital group, Dave Kimelberg can be a pretty buttoned-up guy. At least until he takes his shirt off. Underneath those long pinstriped sleeves is an impressive body of work -...
Latin Music Thursdays at the Fireplace

Latin Music Thursdays at the Fireplace

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 & 20 Sometimes, we get sick of hopping from restaurant to bar. We want a place that has it all, where we can enjoy a good meal and then linger for hours afterwards. Good news: Latin Music Thursdays at the Fireplace (1634 Beacon...
Safe Haven

Safe Haven

Not all of Boston’s artistic talent is getting noticed in Newbury Street galleries and line-out-the-door music venues. Haven (1820 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester, 617.929.0299), an art lounge and bistro that’s set to open Labor Day weekend, targets those...
Hot Buzz: Small-Batch Vodka

Hot Buzz: Small-Batch Vodka

This ain't your grandfather's bathtub gin. Hell, it's not even gin. We've come a long way from moonshine, baby, and small-batch vodkas are excellent proof (wink wink). Distilled in small quantities to ensure premium quality, these are...
Hot Obsession: Matsuzaka Mania

Hot Obsession: Matsuzaka Mania

Once upon a time, sushi was an event. You planned an outing and you coveted the unagi. You ordered quality sake at only a few select Asian establishments. Then the Red Sox signed a certain pitcher and our city took on a more Eastern flair. Now Japanese...
Hot Import: Icelandic Products

Hot Import: Icelandic Products

A slew of luxurious, eco-friendly, and just plain fun products from Iceland (to say nothing of its über-attractive citizens) are proving why that country is worth a visit. But even if you can't get there, Iceland's natural resources - geothermal...
Hot House: The Estate

Hot House: The Estate

Once you party at The Estate (1 Boylston Place, Boston, 617.351.7000), formerly known as Mansion Boston, it's tough to imagine yourself anywhere else. A hotspot ever since its February opening, the former home of the Big Easy has transcended its humble...
Hot at Night: Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Hot at Night: Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Sometimes museum visits can feel like third-grade field trips: all hum-drum lectures, piped-in music, and blah cafeteria lunches. But not so at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (280 The Fenway, Boston, 617.566.1401), especially beginning on September...
Hot Date: Centerfolds

Hot Date: Centerfolds

It might not be your typical dinner-and-a-movie, but a night out at Centerfolds (12 LaGrange Street, Boston, 617.292.2600) isn't just for boozy bachelor parties anymore. Last time we visited the gentlemen's club, we were seriously impressed by...
