Whenever we think of Aimee Mann, we immediately remember the alarm she sounded over the radio waves over and over again in the mid-1980s: “Voices carry,” she warned. Well, hers does. Her seventh studio release, @#%&! Smilers, came out in June. In her latest tunes, the dour songstress weaves melancholy narratives of characters in psychic dire straits. The reference to smiling in the album’s title is tinged with irony and bitterness. That, of course, prompts her fans to smirk. See why tonight at 8 p.m. when she enchants with those mournful yarns at the Berklee Performance Center (136 Mass Ave, Boston, 617.747.2261). Tickets ($35 to $40) can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com.
