"Underworld" accompanied by the Alloy Orchestra at the Somerville Theatre

SATURDAY, MARCH 15
From time to time, we attempt to break from our queue of Gossip Girl episodes in favor of something with a touch more substance. Yet try as we might, we tend to find silent films lacking, well, sound. That will not be the case, however, with the 1927 gangster flick Underworld, which is being accompanied by a live performance of the Alloy Orchestra at the Somerville Theatre (55 Davis Square, Somerville, 617.625.5700), tonight at 8 p.m. It's easy to overlook the lack of conversation in Underworld (winner of the first Academy Award for best screenplay) when the sounds of the three-man, Boston-based ensemble, using everything from drums, hubcaps, and truck springs to state-of-the-art electronic equipment, are creating the soundtrack for the film. Presented by CRASHarts, the Boston premiere is a rare chance for cinephiles to catch a screening of Underworld, from famed director Josef von Sternberg. For tickets ($20), call 617.876.4275 or visit www.crasharts.org.
