WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13
It's 4 p.m. and your best friend texts you: "Tonight - indie band with the cute drummer, or opera show in Cambridge?" The choice seems obvious until you realize that the Cambridge venue is the Lizard Lounge (1667 Mass Ave, Cambridge, 617.547.0759) and the show is a production from Opera Boston's Opera Boston Underground series. Tonight's performance, "Quickies," is a collection of short operas with a Valentine's Day tilt; the bill includes Lukas Foss's Introductions and Good-Byes (1960), Samuel Barber's A Hand of Bridge (1959), and one or two others. The series, which aims to make opera more approachable for a twentysomething audience, moves the genre into offbeat settings (hence the Cambridge basement) and allows its tied-to-tradition performers to let loose and try something new. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30; the cover charge is $8, and no advanced tickets are sold.
