Hotter by the Day: Harrison Avenue

In last year's Hot 100 issue (8.15.06), we reported that the South End's Harrison Avenue - or "SoHa," as we begrudgingly referred to it - was the year's "Hot Street." Well, we couldn't help but give it a second mention, because the neighborhood's temperature is still rising. The mid-month openings of affordable neighborhood brasserie Gaslight (560 Harrison Avenue, Boston, 617.422.0224) and the adjacent, eco-friendly Green Light are a major factor. Frank Campanale brought a breath of fresh South American air to the block this spring with the opening of his design store, Diseño (409 Harrison Avenue, Boston, 617.423.2008), and Rocca (500 Harrison Avenue, Boston, 617.451.5151) adds a taste of Liguria to the neighborhood. The street is also home to many local artists and galleries - including Rhys Gallery (401 Harrison Avenue, Boston, 617.357.7497), Samson Projects (450 Harrison Avenue, Storefront 63, Boston, 617.357.7177), and the Bernard Toale Gallery (450 Harrison Avenue, Boston, 617.482.2477) - which are constantly showcasing something cutting-edge. And this fall, keep an eye out for D SCALE (520 Harrison Avenue, Boston, 617.426.1055), a new store from interior designer Dennis Duffy. It'll showcase his own line of home furnishings alongside vintage and contemporary pieces from around the world.
