We love Newbury Street, the South End, and even Kenmore Square as much as the next person, but lately when we need to get our al-fresco-dining fix, we head to Dante (Royal Sonesta, 40 Edwin Land Boulevard, Cambridge, 617.497.4200). The patio here is unlike any other in town: right on the Charles River, off the beaten path, and with killer views of the city, it's a true oasis - yet still mere steps - from the urban grind. And this isn't some très exclusive little scrap of space; the patio at Dante seats 100, plus 14 more at an outdoor bar. Afraid of catching a chill as the warmth of summer wanes? Not to worry: the staff hands out blankets and shawls (which devoted chef/owner Dante de Magistris takes home and washes himself) as temperatures drop. And since Dante is open for both lunch and dinner, you hardly ever have to go inside. [Photo: Kelly Davidson]
