Grape Expectations

We can't even think about going back to school without breaking into a cold sweat, but when it's wine school we're talking about, somehow it becomes more palatable. So we'll be earning all the extra credit we can this summer at the Boston Wine School (1354 Comm Ave, Allston, 617.784.7150). Director Jonathon Alsop has been holding classes for almost 10 years in his basement wine cellar - which held, at best, 12 "very friendly" people - but he recently moved the school into a much more expansive commercial space. Now Alsop is primed for receptions for up to 45 guests, wine dinners for 32, and classes with far more elbow room. Scheduled courses include "Mixing It Up: Blended Wines Around the World" (July 25; sold out) and "Pinot to the People: Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and More" (July 28; $100); the school also offers a lengthier Wine 101 series. Alsop is hoping to add more classes and events this fall, and expects to hire more like-minded wine educators to help with the course load. Extra homework? We say bring it on.
