Priority male: Six ways to update a man’s wardrobe this season
SOME MEN are graced with metrosexual fashion skills that allow them to dress themselves perfectly, without help from a mother, girlfriend, salesperson, or stylist. Most gay men are born with an innate sense of style and the ability to not only follow but set trends. The rest of the male population is, for the most part, wardrobe-challenged. For those of you in this category, we’ve made spring shopping painless and easy, with six easy ways to update your look.

1. Rugby shirts. You don’t have to be athletic to sport this season’s rugby-inspired tops. Choose from pullovers adorned with patches, brightly colored striped polos, zip-up hoodies, and embroidered T-shirts. They’re great for layering and are incredibly comfy.

2. A versatile blazer. Make an investment here: buy a lightweight blazer that can be dressed up or down and even worn as outerwear. The one pictured here, from Dries Van Noten, is a hefty investment, but you’ll get lots of use out of it. Or get inspired at another retailer such as Urban Outfitters or Reiss.

3. Bright colors. Don’t be afraid of being bright. Even if bold isn’t your thing, use bright Ts for layering under your favorite shirt. Colorful T-shirts worn under conservative button-downs or bright button-downs worn under conservative sweaters add a dash of color without going overboard. American Apparel is stocked with every color under the sun.

4. Wrinkled button-downs. Cotton button-downs that are meant to be worn wrinkled are a man’s best friend! This Scotch & Soda button-down from Uniform has another fabulous design feature: perfectly placed snaps and buttons for easy sleeve rolling. When fashion meets function it’s always a recipe for success. Find a striped version at Club Monaco.

5. Lightweight denim. Trade your trusty jeans that got you through winter for a paper-thin, breathable pair. Opt for a medium shade that can be dressed up or down. We love Adriano Goldschmied, but also try Saks Fifth Avenue or the denim experts at Riccardi.

6. Sneakers for non-sneaker-heads. Uniform can’t keep these Gola sneaks in stock. We understand why: they’re the perfect combo of fun, young, modern, and grown-up.
If the thought of shopping for these items on your own still makes you cringe, consult with professional wardrobe stylist Alexandra Ryan at www.showmestyle.net — she’ll do it for you. How can you go wrong with wardrobe advice from a beautiful woman and affordable pricing? @
