Boys club: Men's products we're loving lately

by Heather Bouzan, 09-07-2007

No matter how low maintenance you are, we'll bet you own a decent razor. But it's no good if you're not using the right stuff beforehand. If you're the smart, sensitive type, prep with a few splashes of C.O. Bigelow Barber Pre-Shave Oil for Sensitive Skin ($12) to create a barrier between you and your blades. Or, if you're a little rough around the edges, we recommend the new line's Pre-Shave Oil for Tough Beards ($12) to soften even the coarsest facial hair. Find both products, along with the rest of the Bigelow Barber line, at C.O. Bigelow (Copley Place, 100 Huntington Avenue, Boston, 617.236.7257).

You've outgrown your tube of Clearasil (and, thankfully, that bad case of pizza-face, too), but you still need something to deal with the occasional zit or shaving-induced ingrown hair. The adult way to cope? Jack Black's 3-in-1 Clear Complexion Solution ($25), available at Neiman Marcus (5 Copley Place, Boston, 617.536.3660). The oil- and fragrance-free formula doesn't fool around: salicylic and lactic acids take care of dead skin and oily buildup, while green tea and witch hazel fight redness and inflammation.

For those of you who can't bear to throw away your beer money on grooming products, there's an affordable option that doesn't scrimp on style. Every Man Jack, a line that launched at Target (various locations) in April, is all about quality men's products that won't break the bank. We're fans of the Body Wash and Shower Gel ($4.99), which contains tea-tree oil (it's good for skin), peppermint oil (to wake you up, lazy), and glycerin (to lock in moisture). An added bonus: the deep-cleaning, non-drying formula won't leave you smelling like a girl.

Lacking a little up top? The men's grooming gurus at Sharps have developed a lotion just for you. Mission: Control Bald Head Balm ($24) is formulated to even skin tone, moisturize, and soothe that poor naked scalp of yours. And it's got SPF 15, so you won't have to worry about the sun that's been glinting off your dome all afternoon. Get it at Motley (623 Tremont Street, Boston, 617.247.6969).

Moisturizer gets a bad rap with the male contingent, but we promise that Save the Males Multi-Benefit Moisturizer ($32.50), developed by Origins for Men, is completely guy-friendly. The oil-free, lightweight lotion absorbs quickly, allowing active ingredients such as avocado extract, which controls oil, and Chinese wolfberry and mangosteen extracts, both of which have antioxidant properties, to get working stat. Head to Harvard Square for your supply, available at Origins (8 Brattle Street, Cambridge, 617.868.8090).

Sure, it sounds a little bit like a beauty treatment, but a few handfuls of Anthony Logistics for Men Sea Salt Body Scrub ($32) in the shower will make all the difference for your scaly skin. Sea salt helps exfoliate, while vitamin C, sea-kelp extract, and aloe-vera gel soothe and moisturize. Plus, it's fragrance-free, so no one will catch on to your high-maintenance tendencies. Find the limited-edition super-size bottle online at www.anthony.com; in honor of Prostate Cancer Month this September, proceeds will benefit the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center's research on the disease.
