Blunch 'n' munch

by Heather Bouzan, 03-10-2008

We love secret little neighborhood joints, but we just can't keep Blunch (59 East Springfield Street, Boston, 617.247.8100) to ourselves any longer. Local restaurant veteran Nikki Christo fixes fresh, casual breakfast and lunch dishes, including egg sandwiches, house-made granola, soups, salads, and pressed sandwiches like the Wilbur ($6.50), a cheesy BLT, and the Bird ($6.75), sliced chicken breast with fontina cheese, oven-roasted tomatoes, and artichoke aioli. Blunch is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. As word spreads, Sundays may be in the cards, too. The restaurant seats 12 (with outdoor space once the weather permits), and airy windows make for great people-watching. Don't fault Christo for closing shop early; she's up at 5 a.m. every day adding "Today's Whims" to http://www.eatblunch.com/.

Food looks good. Shame that the owner is unfriendly. Go some place else for lunch.

I couldn't disagree more...I frequent Blunch at least 3X per week, if not for the absolutely AMAZING sandwiches and creative specials, but for warmth of the staff, especially the owner. She positively exudes hospitality and genuine joy in contributing to a neighborhood which is sorely lacking in homespun cafes, shops, etc. These are times when we all should be grateful for a non-franchised, owner-occupied cafe as this. I am one of the loyal fans, and we are legion. Keep up the great work and know that you are unique and very-much supported. Those who have not been - try the Bird!
