The Life at the Boston Conservatory Mainstage Theater

by Heather Bouzan, 02-25-2008

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5 - SUNDAY, MARCH 9
We love a good seedy underbelly, and The Life, at the Boston Conservatory Mainstage Theater (31 Hemenway Street, Boston, 617.912.9222), delivers it. The musical, set amongst the pimps, prostitutes, and porn stars of a Times Square that bears little resemblance to the one that dazzles us these days, gives credence to some of the sometimes-contradictory emotions that emerge from dire circumstances: strength, empowerment, hope, and love. A musical score by Cy Coleman with lyrics by Ira Gasman lends the show cohesion and a funky, toe-tapping soundtrack. Jacqui Parker makes her Boston Conservatory directorial debut. Performances are Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m.; get general-admission tickets ($20) at 617.912.9222.
