Rob Sheffield Reading at Brookline Booksmith

by Heather Bouzan, 01-28-2008

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30
Tonight at 7 p.m., Rob Sheffield reads from his new book Love is a Mix Tape. No, this isn't a misplaced listing from 1991. Though mix-tape technology is one step away from eight-tracks, the Rolling Stone contributing editor's book spans 1989 to 1996: the last days of the noble cassette. Those were also the years when Sheffield - a "shy, skinny, Irish Catholic geek from Boston" - was in love with Renée, a "hell-raising Appalachian punk-rock girl." A passion for music was the pair's greatest bond. The story of their life together, and Renée's eventual death, is framed by the playlists of Sheffield's favorite mix tapes from the period. Sheffield reads tonight at the Brookline Booksmith (279 Harvard Street, Brookline, 617.566.6660).
