Feeding Frenzy: St. Alphonzo’s Kitchen, Legal Sea Foods, B&G Oysters, and Eastern Standard

NEWS FROM the South (Boston, that is): Peter Irving and Natasha Kanieff have reinvented their comfort-food hideaway, Potbellies Kitchen. It's now called St. Alphonzo's Kitchen; the new name comes from a Frank Zappa tune, "St. Alphonzo's Pancake Breakfast." >> Also coming to Southie - though not until 2010 - is a brand-new Legal Sea Foods. It'll overlook the harbor and have lots of outdoor seating. >> Speaking of seafood, B&G Oysters now offers Oyster Tasting Tuesday Nights. Winter is high season for oysters, and B&G chef de cuisine JJ Lundrigan will be playing with the succulent mollusks, pushing them to do gastronomic tricks. The tasting menu will be available on Tuesday evenings throughout the winter and will be offered in addition to the regular menu. Not a bad thought for Valentine's Day. >> A new favorite drink prepared by Eastern Standard mixologist Jackson Cannon is the B&T. It's a surprising new cocktail made with 60 percent tequila and 40 percent B&B - the classic French brandy and Benedictine. >> Here's a plug for a fabulous little book that will act like a steam vent for the most pompous foodies in your world: The Food Snob's Dictionary: An Essential Lexicon of Gastronomical Knowledge (Broadway, 2007), by David Kamp and Marion Rosenfeld - the same people who wrote The United States of Arugula: The Sun-Dried, Cold-Pressed, Dark-Roasted, Extra Virgin Story of the American Food Revolution. Buy it, slip it in your pocket, and bring it with you to dinner.
